Statement
Throwing pots is an exploration in living an authentic life for me. It is the nature of clay itself that draws me. Clay is so reflective of the hand that shapes it. It is through the mirror of clay -- dirt some call it, that I see what lies within …. Strangely enough, this self same dirt, is what offers me clarity. Clay cannot lie. It makes me stand before myself -- it demands authenticity, and is incapable of anything else.
When I sit at the wheel, with a piece of clay before me, the dialogue begins. I pause as I place that first piece of clay upon the wheel and I ask: “what do you have to tell me today ?“ …. It has the feeling of something sacred. Placing that clay before me, I feel that instead of offering up the clay to the wheel, I stand at the altar of myself -- seeking clarity. I feel that I am entering into a meditation, a conversation with self and Self, through the medium of clay.
When I work with clay upon the wheel I learn so much. Clay
offers insights into self, boundaries, relationships... Within the clay, lies the nature of the moon to the sun, the yin to the yang, the receptive to the creative …. The composition of clay itself -- in its most elemental forms -- the earth and water, combine with the fire and air of the kiln, to bring a pot to life. As a potter, I infuse the clay with spirit, birthing it into its many forms. Through clay, I honor the sacred nature of living an authentic life -- with my hands, heart, and soul immersed in what it means to be truly alive.
